We have significant expertise in standards related work. Our thriving standards practice focuses on two core areas: drafting and prosecuting Standards Essential Patents (SEPs), and conducting essentiality assessments across a wide range of technologies.
Our team regularly works with technologies governed by standards in areas such as telecommunications, video decoding, and audio decoding. We have recent experience drafting and prosecuting patents aligned with various standards such as 5G NR, Versatile Video Coding (VVC), High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), and many others.
In addition to our drafting and prosecution SEP work, we are frequently appointed by leading patent pools to conduct independent essentiality assessments – evaluating whether a patent is essential to the implementation of a specific standard. This requires not only deep technical understanding but also legal insight into claim interpretation and how courts are likely to assess infringement. A recent focus of this work has been evaluating patents for audio decoding related to the MPEG-4 AAC and MPEG-H standards.
