Henry Aldridge

Profile

Henry is a Partner and European and UK Patent Attorney in our Electronics, Software and Communications team. He is also a UPC representative.

He works with a range of clients, including multinationals, SMEs, and individual inventors. He is experienced in drafting, filing, and prosecuting patent applications in a number of different technical areas, including telecommunications, video coding, consumer electronics, medical devices, software-related inventions, and electric vehicles. Henry has a particular interest in AI, having drafted and prosecuted AI-related inventions across these technical areas and others.

Henry also has a particular interest in standard-essential patents, having been involved in the drafting and prosecution of patent applications targeting a number standards, including the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), Versatile Video Coding (VVC) and High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) standards, for example.

In addition to drafting, filing, and prosecution, Henry has experience of EPO oppositions and appeals for a variety of technologies, such as telecommunications, online gambling, and consumer electronics. On a number of occasions, parallel UPC actions have been ongoing, requiring coordination across the different cases.

Prior to his career in IP, Henry spent time working at a point-of-care diagnostics company helping to develop an ultra-rapid system which uses a low cost instrument and disposable cartridges to diagnose infections requiring immediate treatment and control.

Education

Henry graduated from the University of Southampton with a first class Master’s degree in Particle Physics. For the final year of his Master’s degree, Henry worked on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN in Geneva. His master’s project focused on stabilising vacuum phototriodes in the erratic radiation fields of the LHC through the use of LED pulsers, so that the excellent energy resolution of the Electromagnetic Calorimeter in the CMS experiment could be maintained.

Henry has also studied AI at Imperial College London and holds a Professional Certificate in Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence from Imperial. As part of this, he participated in a Bayesian optimisation-based capstone competition, as well as completing a portfolio project focused on classifying patent applications using logistic regression.

Henry also holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Intellectual Property Law from Queen Mary University.
