Meet our Team: Devyani Patel

As part of our ‘Meet our Team’ series, we ask Devyani Patel, a Chartered Trade-Mark Attorney based in our London office, about her journey into intellectual property, what she loves about Venner Shipley and what her hobbies are outside of work.

When did you join Venner Shipley/AA Thornton and what office do you work in?

I joined AA Thornton in September 2022 and Venner Shipley in December 2024 following the combination.

How did you get into working in IP?

Working at AA Thornton was my first proper role in IP beyond some work experience. During my master’s degree, I took a number of modules that focussed on IP law, and I found them fascinating. At the same time, I managed to secure a vacation scheme at another IP Law firm that really solidified IP Law as the right industry for me.

What areas do you currently specialise in in your role?

As a recently qualified attorney, I don’t really have a specialism but enjoy getting involved with the wide variety of work the team handles. As part of this, I do a lot of online enforcement work which includes sending C&D letters, online takedowns and more formal proceedings under the UDRP and DRS.

What do you enjoy most about working in IP law?

I really enjoy being able to work with a range of clients in different industries and getting to know their businesses. From luxury fashion to telecommunications to food and drink brands, there are trade marks everywhere.

What recent successes/achievements have you had?

I am super proud of passing my final exams with distinction and finally being able to say I am a qualified attorney. Perhaps more impressively, I have also really nailed my spicy margarita recipe recently and it is a crowd pleaser.

What’s the best thing about working at Venner Shipley?

Being able to work with all my colleagues from AA Thornton whilst being able to meet and work with loads of amazing new people has been great.

What do you think is on the horizon in IP? 

I think we are already seeing it but the rise of metaverse goods and subsequently trade mark applications is definitely causing waves.

What do you do outside of work?

Outside of work I am an avid gym-goer and weightlifter. You will often find me complaining about my sore knees, calloused hands, and insane protein intake.
