Profile
Pawel (Pav) Piotrowicz is a European and UK Patent Attorney in our Electronics, Software and Communications team with over 25 years’ experience, and is the firm’s former Managing Partner.
He specialises in the fields of physics, electronics and computer software, and also in inventions which are multidisciplinary in nature. His areas of expertise include semiconductor devices, embedded systems, power electronics, nanotechnology, AI and machine learning, quantum technologies, computer simulation, materials informatics, optical systems, sensors, medical devices, ultrasonics, agri-tech and water technologies.
Pav played a central role in Enlarged Board of Appeal (EBA) G1/19 (Pedestrian Simulation) which is the most authoritative case on the patentability of computer-implemented inventions at the EPO, and for which he won the Managing IP award for European Impact Case of the Year in 2022.
Pav advises universities, start-ups and multinational corporations on IP and IP strategy. He regularly speaks on IP in the UK and around the world and is a contributor to the TenU USIT Guide for Software 2024.
Education
Pav graduated from the University of Manchester with a first class honours degree in Physics. He was awarded a PhD in Physics from Cambridge University following research into mesoscopic effects in III-V semiconductor devices. Pawel also has a certificate in intellectual property law from Queen Mary, University of London.

パゥエルは、電子工学・工学分野の英国・欧州特許弁理士です。業界の経験も持ち、弊所入所前は、大手の多国籍エレクトロニクス企業で研究職に就き、メモリーデバイスの開発を行っていました。ハイテクセクターの幅広い顧客層をカバーし、多くの個人発明家や新興企業、大手の多国籍企業など、英国、ヨーロッパ、日本、アメリカを含む各国の多様な顧客を担当しています。
専門分野は、物理、エレクトロニクス、コンピューターソフトウェアで、また学際的な発明も扱っています。専門技術としては、半導体デバイス、埋め込みシステム、パワーエレクトロニクス、オートモーティブエレクトロニクス、ナノテクノロジー、スピントロニクス、プリンテッドエレクトロニクス、RFIDデバイス、テレコム、コンピューターネットワーク、コンピューターシュミレーション、オプティカルシステム、センサー、医療機器等を含みます。
彼は、欧州特許庁や英国知財財産庁に対しての、特許出願、異議申立、審判請求等を扱っています。また海外の業務にも詳しく、とりわけアメリカ、日本、韓国、中国などで、現地の弁理士を通し随時権利確保を行っています。
また、定期的に企業や大学から知的財産に関する講義依頼を受け、知財クリニックを開催しています。新聞やラジオにて知的財産に関するインタビューを受けることもあります。
2006年には、ベナー・シップリーのケンブリッジオフィス設立に中心となって貢献しました。

学歴
パゥエルは、マンチェスター大学物理学部を第一級の成績で卒業、その後ケンブリッジ大学にて、III-V族半導体デバイスにおけるメゾスコピック効果の研究を終え、物理学の博士号を取得。ロンドン大学クイーンメアリー校での知的財産法コースも終了。
