Lenny Hirsch

Profile

Lenny is a Trainee Patent Attorney in our Electronics, Software and Communications team. His main interests lie in quantum technologies, optics, and sensing.

His BSc and MSc projects were focused on programming of quantum computers and analysis of encoding circuits for robust quantum communication and instantly sparked an interest in quantum technologies, leading to a PhD in quantum metrology.

His PhD research, focusing on quantum-enhanced THz time domain spectroscopy (THz TDS), used ultrafast nonlinear optics and quantum metrological techniques to improve the sensitivity of THz TDS measurements, culminating in the first demonstration of a quantum-enhanced THz TDS measurement.

Following the completion of his PhD, Lenny worked as an invention engineer, creating novel, patentable inventions for a host of international blue-chip clients and gaining commercial experience within the IP sector.

Education

Lenny graduated with a BSc in Physics from the University of Leeds in 2017, before going on to gain an MSc in Digital Communications Networks in 2018. He later obtained a PhD in Quantum Metrology and THz Time-domain Spectroscopy from the University of Glasgow in 2024. His doctoral research focused on the design of a THz-TDS system optimised for high signal-to-noise ratio, with his thesis titled “Design of a THz-TDS system optimised for high signal-to-noise ratio”.
