Carine Makendi

Profile

Carine is a Part-qualified Patent Attorney in our Chemical and Life Sciences team based in Cambridge. For her BSc and MSc final year projects, she worked for an international pharmaceutical company and then for Wellcome Sanger Institute on the development and improvement of bacterial vaccines.

During her PhD, Carine investigated the mechanism of infection of known pathogens and identified potential targets for the development of new vaccine candidates and the design of more effective drugs. She also explored the use of antimicrobial peptides as an alternative to standard antibiotics.

Her research expertise covers whole-genome sequencing technologies, genomic and transcriptomic analysis, in-vitro and in-vivo models of diseases, antibody therapeutics and vaccines.

Education

Carine completed her industry-funded PhD at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge (awarded by the LSHTM).  Prior to this, she studied for her BSc and MSc in Biotechnology in Italy.
