Profile

Anton is a European and UK Patent Attorney, and works in our Guildford office. He is a partner in our Chemical & Life Sciences team.

Anton specialises in biotechnology, pharmaceutical & chemical patent matters. He has a deep understanding of molecular biology, biochemistry, and genetics, and has particular expertise in patenting therapeutic antibodies, vaccines, RNA, biomarkers, and cell & gene therapy inventions. Anton has drafted hundreds of patent applications in the biotechnology, chemical & pharmaceutical sectors.

Anton handles all aspects of patent practice, and has a large domestic practice which involves a considerable amount of direct client work, including advising on patent filing strategies, drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the UKIPO, the EPO and national patent offices, and managing international patent portfolios. Anton is experienced in helping his clients in relation to patent infringement and patent validity, and he routinely performs freedom-to-operate clearances of third party patents, as well as providing due diligence opinions. Anton also enjoys complex opposition and appeal work, and regularly attends oral proceedings at the EPO.

Anton works for a broad spectrum of clients, both in the UK and overseas, and has extensive experience of working with UK academic institutions and their associated university technology transfer departments, university-derived spin-out companies, SME’s, as well as large multinational biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. He is proactive, and provides his clients with clear, commercially relevant and strategic advice. Anton regularly lectures on a variety of IP-related topics, including issues relating to patenting bioscience inventions.

Education

Anton graduated from Nottingham University with an Honours degree in Biochemistry & Genetics. He then attended UMIST where he obtained a Master’s degree in Bioreactor Systems & Chemical Engineering, in which his research project involved the design and construction of expression vectors for use in S. coelicolor. Anton also holds a PhD in Genetic Engineering, in which his research focused on the genetics of ethanol tolerance and production in the yeast, S. cerevisiae. He also holds a postgraduate Certificate in Bioinformatics from Manchester University.
