Meet our Team: Ben Howell

As part of our ‘Meet our Team’ series, we ask Ben Howell, one of our newly joined ESC (Electronics, Software and Communications) trainee patent attorneys based in our London office, about his journey to intellectual property, what he loves about Venner Shipley and what else he enjoys in life.

When did you join Venner Shipley and what office do you work in?
I joined Venner Shipley in September 2024 and I work in the London office.

How did you get into working in IP?
Having done a Master’s Degree in Physics and Philosophy, I looked for a role that would enable me to use my skills in both science and writing. I was recommended IP law by a friend and, after trying it out at some summer internships, I decided it was a great fit!

What areas do you currently specialise in in your current role?
I have mainly worked in the prosecution of patents as well as doing some opposition work. Many cases I handle relate to screens for electronic devices, but I have also handled cases around computer implemented inventions.

What do you enjoy most about working in IP law?
I particularly enjoy getting to learn about interesting new technologies. Helping a business to bring new ideas to market is extremely rewarding.

What recent successes/achievements have you had (personal/professional)?
Having recently started work as a patent attorney, I am pleased to be improving and continually learning more about the world of IP. Outside work I was pleased to be awarded Sports Colours for my performance in gymnastics during my final year of university.

What’s the best thing about working at Venner Shipley?
I have found the culture of Venner Shipley to be extremely welcoming. I feel very well supported and everyone is always willing to make time to help me improve.

What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy doing gymnastics (particularly the rings) and playing the piano.
