Meet our Team: Ben Beasley

As part of our ‘Meet our Team’ series, we ask Ben Beasley, one of our newly promoted Chemical &  Life Sciences partners based in our London office, about his journey to becoming a patent attorney, what he loves about Venner Shipley and what his hobbies are.

When did you join Venner Shipley and what office do you work in?
I joined Venner Shipley in 2013 and I work in the London office.

How did you get into working in IP or your current role?
The idea of becoming a patent attorney was introduced to me by my science teacher whilst at school.  I enjoyed English and science in equal measure and so when thinking about what I might want to do for a career, patent law seemed like the ideal fit.

What areas do you currently specialise in in your role?
I have a technical background in chemistry and chemical engineering, but my caseload is quite general and also encompasses other areas, in particular medical devices and consumer products.

What do you enjoy most about working in IP law?
Helping businesses realise how much IP they generate and its potential value is rewarding.  In addition, the subject-matter can often be intellectually demanding and therefore an enjoyable challenge.

What recent successes/achievements have you had (personal/professional)?
Being promoted to partner!

What’s the best thing about working at Venner Shipley?
The people!  Working with intelligent and hard working people who give 100% every day to give the best possible service to their clients whilst at the same time maintaining a modern and non-stuffy working environment.

What do you think is the next big thing (or on the horizon) in IP? 
AI continues to make waves.  I think that its use in the discovery of new medicines will continue to grow in importance and significantly alter how we go about finding new treatments.

What do you do outside of work? (hobbies, family?)
I have many hobbies!  At the moment, my main hobbies are running, cycling and rugby.  I am also working towards my Private Pilot Licence (PPL).
